Luke tells Buffy matter-of-factly: “You’re strong. I’m stronger.”
And it appears that he is right: the scene ends as Buffy cowers .literally under Luke who is trying to kill her!
Episode one , “The Hellmouth” is part of a two episode arc. You need to watch episode two of Buffy to see how she gets out of this predicament which looks to be her certain death.
By the end of this episode, we realize that Buffy finds it almost impossible to NOT fight vampires. Although at some level she resist this because of the danger to herself and others in so many ways. At the end we are treated to a hair-raising cliff-hanger ending where we fear for Buffy’s life. If you want to find out what happened – read my review of Season One Episode two. And I hope I have talked her into watching the series!
PS – If you want your own journal that looks just like the giant book that Giles had, check out this Vampyr notebook. Apparently, it was started by some of the other Slayer Potentials and has all kinds of information about the Slayer line and the monsters they face. True enough you will have to watch the series to catch the references – but that is the point – watch the series!
The first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer – “Welcome to the Hellmouth,” introduces us to our hero Buffy in her new setting Sunnydale high. We meet her mother Joyce and her watcher Giles. Along with the Scoobies: Willow, Xander and even Cordelia they will be the crew that helps her defeat unspeakable evils that lurk around the Hellmouth. The Hellmouth is Ground Zero for all kinds of foul beasts. In this episode, the villain vampires Darla, Luke and the Big Bad Master are introduced – as well as the love of her life “Angel.”
The episode of starts with a break-in by the school library – a couple of normal kids is looking for a place to make out . The boy is a student at Sunnyvale and for a while the girl seems intimidated by him. He takes advantage of this and tries to scare her as much as he can for a joke. They continue to That changes when she reveals her true face – and shows that she is the vampire “Darla.” Darla was not really interested in the guy for love, instead she wanted to make him her dinner!
We meet Buffy Summers, the high school sophomore who faces her destiny as a slayer of the undead. However , to say that she tries to do anything she can to get away from that destiny is to put it mildly.
Buffy is from LA where she a popular cheerleader and had a busy social life as a freshman. However she was told of – and shown her destiny by her first Watcher Merrick. She reluctantly fought vampires, however she rose to the occasion when she had to. But when she had to she also burned down the vampire festered gym! The authorities did not understand of course – so she and her mother had a painful relocation to Sunnydale.
Buffy is bound and determined that she will not be Vampire Slayer Buffy but will just be regular teen age girl Buffy. Her fashion sense and prestige as someone coming from L.A. meant that she was a natural to be adopted as a Cordette” a cliche of rich, mean girls run by Cordelia Chase. Cordelia reaches out to her – and at first it looked like they could have a friendship together until Cordelia reveal her unnecessarily bitchy side by viciously picking on Willow.
But vampires are Buffy’s reality – not Queen of May
From the time she comes into the library and Giles gives her the book Vampyr instead of her school book – she knows she is living her destiny even as she resists.
“You really have no idea what is going on, do you? You think it is a coincidence you being here? That boy was just the beginning. That boy was just the beginning.”
Buffy asked :”Why can’t you people just leave me alone?”
“Because you are the Slayer. In each generation a Slayer is born. One girl in all the world – a chosen one. One born with the strength and skill to hunt the vampires.”
Buffy explains why she has retired.
But by the end of this episode , Buffy is back to fighting vampires.
The idea of retiring comes back time and time again through out the series.
She tries to avoid her fate – but a vampire murder in the school drags her to her destiny.
Soon we meet Buffy’s two best friends Willow and Xander.
We learn about Willow and Xander in the next scenes . As they pour out of a history class where there was a lively discussion of the Black Death, Willow reveals that she has a wicked crush on Xander, although Xander considers her only as a best friend. And when it comes to unrequited crushes: Xander has a tremendous crush on Buffy from the first time he sees her and falls off his skateboard to the end of the series.
We meet up with Willow as she is having her lunch alone on a bench. Buffy reaches out to her, although Willow has such a poor self-image, she can’t even see why she would be making the effort. Xander hangs around Willow – so it is a natural group. We also meet the tragic Jesse.
After that gym is canceled because of a death in the locker room. As snoopy Buffy examines the vampire bitten neck she knows that it is happening again. She argues with Giles about her place in the scheme, but we know that she can’t escape her destiny forever.
The Hellmouth and the Master
Soon we learn that underneath Sunnydale idyllic Southern CA landscapes is the Hellmouth, with a enormously strong vampire who has been trapped there for decades.
We meet The Master, Darla’s sire, who is worshiped and obeyed by many of the underling vampires.
The Master is very tired of being trapped – and he is using his servants to get him to the surface so he can rule asap.
Buffy meets Angel: the Vampire with a Soul
No time is wasted in this series: even as Buffy is just walking to the Bronze she meets up with Angel. Even though Angel is a vampire – which Buffy does not know in this scene – he has been cursed with a soul by vengeful gypsies. Therefore he is tortured to remember the horrible evil deeds that he has done, and he is trying to make amends.
In the above scene he warns Buffy about where she is and what is at stake. He gives her a special gift of a cross necklace which she puts on.
The Bronze – the Nightclub Every Town Wants
Throughout the series we will be treated to some wonderful music – all played live at the club we wish we had in our town. Well except for the vampires.
The first trip to the Bronze is eventful, as all of them are. Even though you would think that some of the visits to a teen and college age club would just be drinking and dancing to cool live bands – it is never to be. But the Bronze seems to be the perfect place for Buffy to start meeting her friends.
Buffy meets the Bronze
First of all, Buffy meets Angel on the walk to the club. He follows her and they have a cryptic conversation when he also says that the time for waiting is gone – and that she must be ready for “The Harvest.”
Once she is at the club , she is met up with Giles, who was hoping that he could connect with her to further her training even if she was reluctant. She is snippy – but she comes to action when she watches Willow go “seize the moment” by picking just the wrong guy – a vampire. Before Buffy knows it she is involved in trying desperately to find the vampire before he sucks her new friend dry.
She meets up with Xander – and although he thinks the whole thing might be a joke he follows her out of concern for his good friend Willow. The vampire takes Willow through a graveyard and then into a crypt, where he prepares to kill her. Luckily Buffy finds him before he has the chance to kill Willow, but they are met up with the other stronger vampires. That includes Darla and the Master’s faithful servant: Luke.
Willow and Xander escape at Buffy’s insistence, but Buffy remains to fight the monster vampire Luke.

Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer – running 1997 – 2003 and Grimm 2011 – 2017 were extraordinarily popular science fiction series with some similarities and major differences. Both were about strong supernatural heroes that fought monsters. And eventually won. But Nick Burkhardt in Grimm was a police officer in his day job, and Buffy was a teenage girl. Both have loves, friends and demons that they fought – making both series excellent supernatural TV.
Grimm vs Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The Grimm – Nicholas Burkhardt was a police detective before he was called to be a Grimm
Buffy was a typical teenage girl before she was called to be a vampire slayer
Grimms like Nick, Trubel, his Mom and Aunt Marie fight bad Wesen – monstrous people
And the Slayer Buffy fights vampires and demons, as well as a cyborg, a robot and a hell god . (There are other Slayers – but she is always the best)
Nicholas Burkhardt fell in love with two Hexenbeist – witches with tremendous power.
Buffy fell in love with two vampires – Angel and Spike – both of whom eventually got a soul.
Grimm characters are all adult.
On Buffy the characters grow up from high school to adulthood. The series Angel characters were adult, but there is a lot that adults can enjoy from Buffy.
Grimms have special weapons to fight with. These weapons were passed down for the hundreds of years that Grimms have existed. And you can find a lot of them in Aunt Marie’s trailer.
Buffy had a cache of special weapons – including a stake called “Mr. Pointy.” She is infamous for using the crossbow – but the Slayer Scythe saved the whole world.
Grimm takes places in Portland Oregon
Buffy takes place in Sunnydale, CA (which is made up) and Angel is set in LA – the city of angels
Buffy Summers and The Grimm both fought monsters
What Buffy Fought
You never knew what Buffy was going to come up against. Buffy fought vampires, demons of all descriptions and the occasional zombies. She also was known to known to fight a god once , and even her best friend Willow the witch.
(She was out-fought in the last two fights, but she still ended up winning the mission ultimately.)
What Nick Burkhardt Fought
In Grimm Nick Burkhardt fought specifically Wesen. Wesen looked like regular people – but they were creatures and monsters underneath. These were the Grimm’s fairy tales monsters – but also legends that were from the folklore of many cultures such as Wendigo, Chupacapra, Aswang, and Anubis.
When they changed or woged – Grimms like Nick could see inside them. Most of the time regular people could not except for extreme emotion, or when they wanted to reveal their truth .
There were no vampires in Grimm. There were a lot of people who would pretend to be normal – but who supernatural beasts inside of them.
Buffy fell in love with two vampires – who turned out to have souls
Buffy did fall in love with one human at least – soldier boy Riley.
The fans were NOT happy with that choice, and they loved her monster loves.
You see the loves of her life were vampires. The first was Angel – the dark handsome stranger that she fell for early in season one. Angel had been a ne’er due well rake prone to womanizing and drink before he was turned into a vampire. He was turned by Darla. When he was turned he became a vicious killer indeed. The most vicious vampire known.
However, due to a gypsy curse, he regained his soul. Therefore he was tortured for him years as he realized how much suffering he had brought to those he tortured and killed. Ironically though the curse allowed him to experience the true love with Buffy that defined the series.
Unfortunately Buffy and Angel were doomed to have a tragic love – when they made love he lost his soul and became her arch-enemy .
She later fell for the vampire Spike who started off as an enemy and through a long series of events ended up regaining his soul. Thus she was able to eventually love him. Spike had been a mama’s boy gentleman, a Victorian poet trying to find his way and loving a woman who could not stand him. Spike was turned by Drusilla . They had a super hot affair for hundreds of years. He too had been vicious and fierce, although it had been for the sport and the chase for him.
Spike fell in love with Buffy before he had a soul, and he actually worked hard to get one. Many people think Spike would have been a better mate for Buffy.
There were wonderful love stories in Grimm – and a triangle
Besides the adventure of fighting monsters and seeing if the heroes were going to win over the apocalypse of the season, we are treated to some mighty love stories in both series. In Grimm police detective Nick Burkhardt is deeply in love with Juliette his live in girlfriend in the first seasons. In fact, it appears that he never falls out of love with her. She is a veterinarian and thoroughly cultured woman, and we all fall in love with her. We see him asking her to marry him several times – but she does not do it because she knows he is keeping a big secret – that he is a Grimm. When he does try to tell her that he is a Grimm, she starts crying. She is afraid that he is crazy, and has created a huge make-believe world.
And unfortunately just as she has the chance to really learn the truth by watching their friends Rosalee and Monroe wogue into the Wesen they are inside – the then bitch witch Adalind puts her into a coma that takes the memory of Nick. By the time they get back together a lot of time has been lost and damage has been done.
But Nick still loves Juliette – very much. Eventually the relationship is healed, and they join together in the mission of fighting the bad Wesen. But due to a series of complicated events, Juliette is turned into a Hexenbiest – the series witch. This leads her with such anger that she ends up destroying their relationship.
It becomes even more complicated when he falls for the woman who is carrying his child – and who is also a witch. Being a mother changes Adeline, and she becomes able to love Nick and their children. But by the end of the series we are left wondering if he wouldn’t have been better off if he had worked it out with his first love Juliette.
There were councils in Europe that wielded great power in their lives
The Wesen Council and Royals
As a Grimm, Nick answered to no one. But there was a Wesen Council that controlled the Wesens, so that they could continue their uneasy peace with regular people. The Wesen Council was generally depicted as a helpful force. Another powerful group in Grimm were the Royals who lived in unspecified parts of Europe. This was a force that had Grimms that worked with them in olden times, and still hoped to control him. Nick Burkhardt wanted to fight against the Royals who almost took his life.
The Watchers Council in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Even though Slayers had the REAL power, they all had Watchers. One of the ironies is that there was a council in England that existed to advise and correct Slayers through correcting the Watchers. They had immense knowledge, and power to make things happen. They might have had a helpful purpose, but their power corrupted them. They became obstacles to Buffy, as well as to Giles her watcher who they eventually fired. She eventually quit listening to them.
The nerdy guy in both series had an animal side – they became werewolves
Oz was the smartest guy at Sunnydale high. So of course he was the lover of Willow our favorite witch.
And then he became a werewolf. In true Joss Whedon style – he was bitten by a young nephew when he was tickling him.
In Grimm, Detective Wu was the brilliant cop who could figure out any computer password, and was a total computer and puzzle nerd. He was only under Detective Burkhardt and Hank as detective.
Unfortunately he got bit by an lycanthrope – a Blutbad with a disease that makes it an uncontrollable werewolf. Like Oz, he was able to learn how to use this for the cause.
In both Buffy and Grimm – it was hard to be or love a witch
In Buffy they were just called “witches and warlocks.” We didn’t get to see much Warlock action, but Willow. Tara and Amy (and of course her mother) were the most famous witches.
The difficulty that being a witch caused in Buffy is infamous – season 6 of Buffy is all about that. Willow gets addicted to the power of magic. And she uses it to kill Warren Mears in a brutal way (flaying anyone?) when he accidentally kills Tara in his attempts to kill the Slayer.
In Grimm witches and warlocks were called Hexenbeists and Zauberbiests . The blond temptress Adeline was the first Wesen that Nick saw. The most tragic Hexenbeist was Juliette. She became a Hexenbeist accidentally when she was trying to help Nick become a Grimm again. In one of the most confusing series of episodes ever – Adeline had sex with Nick in the body of Juliette so that she could take his Grimm powers – then they smoked a hat and Juliette became Adeline – and Nick had to have sex with her so he could become a Grimm again. You have to watch the series to understand. The point is – Nick ends up in love with two witches during the series.
Then there is the little Hexenbeist “Dianna” who was a daughter of Adeline the Hexenbeist and Sean Renard the Zauberbiest. She was the most powerful of all the witches.
The hard part of loving a witch is that they have a hard time in dealing with all that power. Willow goes bad when she gets heart-broken, as does Juliette.
Eventfully both witches learn to use their powers for good, but it was a rocky path to get there!
Big ancient books full of folklore, spells and monsters were tremendously important
Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Grimm are intelligent series, as opposed to many other horror or crime shows.
“We begin as usual with research,” Giles said. Besides being Buffy’s watcher he was a school librarian and had a tremendous collection of archaic books. Later in Angel he also had access to books of magic, as well as access to the computer where they did their local history.
In the case of Grimm – the trailer full of Grimm books that were essential to their work – which made it even more tragic when Juliette burned it down. When Monroe’s uncle finds a cache of Grimm books in his work as an antiquarian book dealer, they are able to replace part of the important, priceless knowledge.
Travel to and from another hell or heaven dimension at your peril
Buffy had to send Angel to the hell dimension to keep from the world ending . He was animalistic when he came back, and could not even remember who he was.
And when Willow innocently pulled Buffy out of Heaven to the Earth – it was like her hell. And she wasn’t the same. Not only was she a little less human as Spike found out – she unleashed a string of evil that had to be resolved.
In Grimm, when Eve (Juliette) and Nick Burkhardt cross over the mirror to the other place – their coming back brought evil into the world.
Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a Mission that was hard to accept
Both Burkhardt and Buffy were one of a kind people – they both had missions to protect the world. And both missions proved to be hard to accept.
Buffy in particular “just wanted to be a girl,” as her destiny was to be far greater. In order for her to protect the world, she had to be outside of it. She had to forgo the acceptance as a “cool kid” that she would have undoubtedly received if she had just ridden the ripples of being accepted by Cordelia when she moved from Hemery high. But she was sunk when she tried to stake Cordelia when she mistakenly believed she was a vampire. And the social faux pas’s just kept a comin’ .
But it was a lot more serious than being a social outcast in high school – being a slayer could be life threatening. In fact – it was guaranteed – no one got out of the job alive, and few slayers lived past young womanhood.
Even if Buffy had been able to pass as completely normal, her destiny would have grabbed her and held on. In fact several times, she tried to just quit – and she was denied. In the season one finale “Prophecy Girl” – Buffy learns that she is destined to die when she fights the Master. She hears Angel her love and her watcher Giles discussing this and she interrupts them: “So that is it huh? One slayer dies, next one calls. ….They say how he is going to do it? Do you think it is going to hurt?……..I’ve got a way around it. I quit! ” But when the vampires committed a massacre of fellow students – she knew that she had to confront the Master in whatever she could. And that way was by being a slayer even if it meant her death.
Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and Grimm are intelligent compelling series that created a loyal following
Let’s face it, a lot of vampire and supernatural shows are just often silly, or immature. But both the shows in the Buffyverse as well as Grimm were based on bright ideas and had memorable writing. Both series are missed, and will be re-watched over and over by their fans.
Which is better? Well, I guess you know my preference . I think Buffy was the most original, clever TV ever. But I truly like Grimm.
Grimm fans are called “Grimmsters”, and although Buffy and Angel fans don’t have an official nickname – many folks like nicknames based on the brilliant creator – Whedonites deserve a vote. I am convinced that if you check out either series you will become a fan.
Buffy was a blonde superhero that fought most vampires, and loved two.
Sookie Stackhouse was a blonde superhero that fought most vampires and loved two.
There were great actors used well in Buffy and Angel
There were great actors that did the best they could with an inferior plot in in True Blood
The Buffyverse started as a Movie – then great TV – then later comics.
True Blood started as a series of great books that was turned into a spotty TV series.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel dealt with sensitive issues – without profanity and overt sexuality.
True Blood was almost X rated.
Joss Whedon created new, fresh – never seen before TV,
True Blood seemed to rip off Buffy and Angel.
The writing was just so superior: Buffy and Angel are studied in colleges,
True Blood used the F word a lot.
Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the other supernatural vampire series True Blood are entertaining with lots of sexy and intriguing characters However, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has much more depth – as if you were comparing a kids comic book to a piece of classic literature.
Vampire Stories have been around for centuries
Portrait of a traditional vampire man. Count Dracula. Halloween.
Did you know that Dracula wasn’t even the first story in this genre. Something captures us emotionally about the idea of a spooky – usually sexy undead man or woman who can suck our blood and either kill us or turn us to what they are.
However the recent series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and True Blood have kept the genre alive. Both are lots of fun.
Both of these recent supernatural television shows Buffy the Vampire Slayerand True Blood show some similarities – but to my mind even more discrepancies. Both shows have supernatural female superheroes: Buffy the Vampire Slayer of course, and Sookie Stackhouse the telepath who turns out to be a fairy. There are all kinds of vampires and bad guys they fight. Both have some excellent actors. But although both have entertainment value, Buffy is clearly the better show.
The credit goes to both the writers and actors, all of whom worked together to provide some of the most memorable and relatable characters ever put to television.
What were the origins of Buffy the Vampire Slayer vs True Blood?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer started on the screen. BTVS was based on a movie by the same name that didn’t just quite make it. Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland and Paul Reubens left Whedon dissatisfied. But he still believed in the idea of a strong female super-hero who fought vampires. So he created a whole new series. Of course BTVS became wildly popular and gave birth to the other series Angelthat created the Buffyverse .
After the series ended, the fans kept clamoring for more, so the Buffyand Angel Comics were created to help fill in some of the gaps.
On the other hand True Blood started off As a Series of Books – and became a Series on TV
Charlaine Harris did a bang up job in creating some fascinating novels that led themselves to the small screen. The Southern Vampire Novels are infamous if you are a fan of the genre. Much of the strengths of the book series were lost in translation to TV. The books are better at characterization, taking on the important social issue of racism in the South, and free of a lot of the unnecessary violence and gore of the TV series – True Blood.
Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and True Blood had blonde young female superheroes
Whedon deliberately set about to make a young female SUPERHERO instead of a victim. In the horror space, in fact in TV in general that was unheard of.
Both protagonists show a unique and innate power that both leads them on their dark and supernatural path and helps them overcome all of the roadblocks that they face along the way. As well, both characters fall for a similar brooding vampire looking to leave behind their vampiric ways.
However Buffy is definitely on the classic hero’s journey and we see her developing and changing through the series. We are treated with round characters that grow in BTVS , who change in relation to their circumstances and in True Bloodthey seem to be more just reacting to them.
Both heroines “just want to be a girl” at the beginning of the show, but Buffy develops a sense of purpose and strength by the end of the series where she stands alone, and recognizes herself as a woman regardless of who she is with.
Buffy does have some advantages. Buffy had both a mother and a father, although her dad turned out to be disgustingly absent as the series evolved. Sookie on the other hand, has parents who have died. She is raised by a grandmother who loves her. Since she is telepathic she knows that her mother is scared of her – and she latter learns that her father has tried to kill her.
Both women are fierce, but Joss Whedon also creates Buffy as a hero who is funny as hell.
Both heroes are played by excellent actresses: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy and Anna Paquin as Sookie. However, the writing teams of both shows were not equal, so we really cannot see the potential of the stars in True Blood.
It should be noted that each character was created with a unique intention, although it’s a safe bet that Charlaine Harris was certainly consciously taking some inspiration from Buffy when creating Sookie, as well as the overall world of The Southern Vampire Mysteries.
Both heroines grew and developed. Both became women. But although Sookie gives up being with vampires, that does not equal Buffy’s sacrifice in any way. I mean Buffy died twice for her cause.
Basically Sookie had some tough shoes to fill when it came to taking Buffy’s place, and she doesn’t quite meet those high standards.
While Sookie may be the every-girl that audiences see themselves in, Buffy is the hero they aspire to be.
Both Buffy and Sookie had vampire lovers
Beautiful young vampire woman with a blade covered in blood looking at her man dressed up like Dracula for halloween. Seductive couple.
The love of Buffy’s life was Angel, the tall dark and handsome vampire with the soul. If you know the series, you know that Angel had been cursed with this soul. That curse meant that he suffered shame over all the death and destruction he had done in the 145 years he had walked the Earth as a vampire, before he suffered the gypsy curse.
Their love was transformative, taking him from skulking in the gutters with guilt over the crimes that he had committed to becoming a hero against the forces of evil.
Her other vampire love turned out to one of the vampires she had detested the most – Spike or William the Bloody. Spike, the blonde and handsome vampire started off in the series as an arch-enemy. He became someone who was working with the Buffy’s helpers – Xander, Willow, and Giles her watcher when he got essentially neutered but a government project who put a chip in his head.
He ended up spending more time with Buffy and eventually falling in lust and then deep love for her.
And it appears that she fell in love with Spike too.
Both of the vampires hold eternal flames for Buffy, and she is the love of both of their lives.
In True Bloodthere is also a love triangle between Sookie and her two vampire lovers. Like with Buffy and Angel, the tall, dark and handsome Vampire Bill was the first love of Sookie Stackhouse. Vampire Bill had developed over his time as a vampire, going from being a rabid killer to developing a conscience. He is one of the first vampires who realized that he could feed off of humans without killing them. He would hypnotize his victim, into allowing him to feed until Bill was satisfied but the man was still alive. The victim would have no memory of the attack. Thus Bill found a way of living where he did not have to kill humans to survive.
This is the Bill that Sookie found. And this was the educated gentleman who attracted her.
Her second vampire lover – Eric – came to her until strange circumstances as well. Eric – the tall blonde, gorgeous owner of Fangtasia, a vampire bar was completely contemptible to Sookie when she met him. He was arrogant and not interested in doing good. She had been brought to him so that he could take advantage of her telepathic abilities and find a thief that was working at the bar. She had nothing but contempt for him when she first met him.
But the witches cursed Eric and erased his memory, Sookie picks him up on the road and shelters him in her home. Something in him appeals to her. They went on to have a whirlwind relationship that eventually ends, but it seems that Eric and Sookie still share a place in each others heart.
Vampires are different in Buffy the Vampire Slayervs True Blood
In both series, vampires are immortals who have died, and feed on humans for sustenance. They are incredibly strong and fast in both series, and are imbued with special powers.
But there are important differences.
In BTVS when a human dies at the hands of a vampire, and the vampire decides to turn them into vampires, they lose their soul. That means they can do evil deeds without any conscience. They resemble the people they were but they are not that person. And they are compelled to do evil.
Vampires are evil in BTVS and Angelthrough and through. There might be the appearance of the person, but not the personality and humanity. That is what made Angel and Spike – the vampires in the series who get souls special.
Vampires in True Blood were evil, true enough. And the more time that vampires spent together “nesting” the more vicious they became.
But the premise of True Blood is that they could naturally evolve and become more caring and human. But they didn’t do it very much because they were just pure ID, and lets face it – evolving is a lot of work.
Prime examples of vampires who did evolve were Bill, and his progeny Jessica, and Godric and even Eric as time went on.
In BTVS and Angel the only vampires that developed human kindness were Angel and Spike the two Vampires that got their souls.
In True Blood vamps are able to act like humans. The premise of the story is that they are “main streaming” because of a substance – “True Blood” – has been developed that allows them to live without killing humans.
There is a slight difference in how a vampire is created after it is bitten too: in True Bloodthe sire has to sleep in the grave with the new vampire, but in Buffy the sire can go about it’s business after it bites the dead.
What kills vamps differs slightly between the series. Although, be-heading, staking and the sun affects vampires in both series, holy water only burns in Buffy. And it takes longer to kill a vampire through light in True Blood., which is used as a plot twist in several episodes.
How vampires died in BTVSand Angelas opposed to True Bloodis different too. In the Buffyverse, vampires are “dusted.” That means that when they were killed, they were instantly turned to dust. In True Blood, they became this gross, hideous mass of blood and guts. Who needs that?
Both Buffy the Vampire and Angel as well as True Bloodhave hosts of interesting characters and talented actors
However, the characters in Buffy the Vampire Slayer evolve as the series develops, True Blood’s characters are more flat and stereotyped.
Truly Buffyand Angel are on the hero’s journey. Even Spike, Willow and Xander, and Cordelia have evolved by the end of the series.
I mean there were plenty of talented actors and actresses in True Blood. That’s including Juilliard trained actors Nelsan Ellis, Rutina Wesley and Carrie Preston. Sam Trammell and many others do a bang up job as well.
There are plenty of memorable moments in True Blood. One of my favorite actors was Nelsan Ellis. He played the flamboyant gay chef “Lafayette”. In the books by Charlaine Harris, Lafayette was killed off quickly. But the fans loved him so much, that they kept him as a regular through out the whole series. He made it through the whole series, but in real life Ellis died tragically as he tried to withdraw from alcohol by himself. The world is a poorer place because of it.
But although the stories in True Blood will capture your attention – the writing of Buffy is just so much better. Buffyis full of witticisms, and groundbreaking episodes like “The Body” – which talks about real human death, “Once more with Feeling” which is a musical and “Hush” where all the actors are robbed of the ability to speak.
Ironically it was easier to relate to the characters of BTVS and Angel vs True Blood
Buffy’s characters may have been sillier , but they were more relatable.
And True Bloodobviously took on the racism and ignorance of the South, which is praiseworthy indeed. But Joss Whedon expected everyone to know that the series was meant symbolically, with vampires as the destructive forces in high school which of course is your initiation to being an adult. Like he said “there will never be a very special episode of Buffy” – meaning that social issues are addressed in every episode symbolically.
But the characters in True Blood were for the most part less memorable and interesting overall. And somehow they also seemed slightly less human- whether they were vampires or not. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, all characters showed a wide range of emotion, sometimes being humorous, sometimes angry, sometimes sad, and always human (even if they weren’t). In True Blood, the dynamic range of the characters’ emotions simply wasn’t up to this level. A large part of this was the tone of the show, as True Blood was always trying to be more serious and dramatic. There was certainly a share of plot twists that turned out to be very tedious – like the Vampire Authority and the Fellowship of the Sun. However, in effect, it’s arguable that True Blood never hit quite the dramatic highs that Buffy the Vampire Slayer did.
Part of that emotional punch was that the characters were given the breathing room necessary to grow in BTVS, and for the audience to become attached to them. Because Buffy the Vampire Slayer wasn’t afraid to let it’s characters be silly, they grew more endearing to us, and we cared more when something dramatic happened.
Joss Whedon meant for BTVS and Angel to be viewed ironically and appreciated the same way.
Bon Temp, Louisiana was Scary but it was no Sunnydale, CA – which was right above the Hellmouth
Both series have interesting settings to be sure. Bon Temp is steeped in Southern superstition and prejudice – there is little Southern hospitality there .
But although Sunnydale looked like a normal modern Southern CA town – with a UC to boot – it was much more than that.
Because you see that Sunnydale was actually on the mouth of Hell itself.
It was only because the slayer was there to stop the vampires and the demons that they did not crawl out of the Hellmouth and run over the Earth.
Both series had scary monsters to fight – with some differences
Both True Blood and BTVS and Angel had there share of monsters, demons, shape-shifters and vampires. Buffy’s characters showed more depth – they came out of fairy tales and ancient text. Nobody even went to college on True Bloodalthough Tara was the most self educated of the lot.
Vampires were the primary foes in both series.
BTVS is known for it’s monster of the week format, but like True Bloodvampires are the monsters they have to do with.
The heroines had different strength’s -Buffy was a vampire slayer – she came from a long line of vampire slayers – when one died the another would be called. Before she was called she was extremely popular, in her old school she was a cheerleader. Becoming a vampire slayer changed everything, and of course she fought against it. But she did accept it eventually.
Buffy was the only known vampire slayer who had friends that fought with her – and that was her saving grace. In BTVS season 9 episode 3 “The Wish” we see what happens when Buffy is thrown into an alternative universe where she works alone. She is working in the Hellmouth in Cleveland , but answers Giles call to come and fight the Master in the Hellmouth in Sunnydale. She notably says “I work alone.” Even though she is that’s on the challenge of fighting the Master, and even though she is helped by some of her friends like Oz – she is unable to defeat him. Even worse – the Master kills Buffy.
Sookie has some friends but is basically seen as an outcast because the townspeople are afraid of her telepathic abilities. She would not see herself as a hero. She is not answering a call of any kind.
Both series have the same kinds of supernatural with two noticeable differences.
There are no fairies in BTVS and no extra-terrestrials in True Blood.
And much to my dismay – neither series has leprechauns.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel were just better written than True Blood
Joss Whedon is an amazing writer. Did you know that he co-wrote Toy Story? He has written episodes of Roseanne, as well as publishing comic Marvel comics. He did a modern Shakespeare series – “Much to do about Nothing” in black and white. Whedon has written many of the comics that followed the series himself.
Now as for the writers of True Blood – or what were their names again?
There were so many examples of witticisms and unforgettable writing in BTVS and Angel that college classes have been organized around the series. From Buffy’s quirky way of dealing with what would seem to be certain death , to Angel’s and Spike’s discussion of fighting for Buffy’s love, to Spike’s 5 words to describe why he was stalking around Buffy’s house – “out for a walk, Bitch” to Willow’s unforgettable “Bored now” anyone who has watched the series will understand why it is so memorable.
The fact of the matter is that True Bloodwas never as groundbreaking and innovative as Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
There have been many supernatural series on TV The Vampire Diaries, Grimm, Supernatural, The Twilight Saga, Blade and pretty much every other similar work have a similar tone, plot, and color scheme. If these shows are all siblings, Buffy the Vampire Slayeris their proud parent However, it’s not just that Buffy the Vampire Slayer did it first, it’s that Buffy the Vampire Slayer did it better. It’s simply a matter of passion, creativity, and innovation, three qualities that were literally overflowing out of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer cauldron during it’s entire run.
True Bloodcertainly stands out in television but it is but it’s made out of stock elements that it doesn’t develop. Because of this, new people are still being converted into the Buffyverse each day, with fans and devotees actively propagating the mythology of the show with fervor equal to the kind found at the peak of the show’s popularity. Not only is this not currently happening with TrueBlood, but it’s hard to imagine it ever happening because it simply wasn’t as iconic or memorable. The popularity of True Blood is gradually fading away, although there are plans to re-do the trashy supernatural series. (Won’t be the same without Nelsan Ellis if it does happen)
Is True Blood more interesting for adults than Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
Because is dealing with the in inhiation theme, and is about high-school kids it is easy to see why we could believe that it is not for adults.
However, I think the inhiation theme is relevant to all of us no matter how old we are. And Angel did provide an older group of actors.
But if you think that Buffy is just for teeny-boppers you are missing the point. BTVSand Angel are based on change and growth.
True Blood boxed itself in because of the profanity, violence and overt sexuality
True Blood will never be a family show. While I am not a prude, the use of the “f” word for dramatic emphasis grew tiresome pretty quickly.
And while both BTVS and Angel and True Blood both deal with profanity, sexuality, including homosexuality and other adult themes, it is much more subtle in the Buffyverse.
You might say that Joss Whedon was reined in because of the censors of the time. Maybe so. And maybe he would have done it differently if had put out the series in this decade. But I hope not. Somehow, the sexuality is hotter when not all is displayed. Both Bon Temps and Sunnydale were memorable settings
Both True Blood and BTVS have made up settings.
Here I believe that the writers of both series shone. “Bon Temp”s is a tiny, little made up town in Louisiana with creatures of the night, ignorance and bigotry. The opening scene is a collage of KKK, immersion baptisms, and racial protests that let you know what series will be about.
The series True Blo0devolves around a bar “Merlot’s” where by showing the food, people and vampires that visit the bar.
Sunnydale from the Buffyverse was another fictional town – but it had some profound differences. There was a University in Sunnydale, similar to UC Santa Cruz. It was bubbly and effervescent, like Buffy herself, although of course there are lots of dark elements that are being dealt with – And to some degree there was a higher level of education although like the mayor said the populace was “profoundly stupid.”
Many of the characters and plots of True Blood seem to be directly ripped off from BTVS and Angel
Well true enough, most of the vampire genre since Dracula has borrowed from each other. But the makers of True Bloodseemed to be taking notes as they watched BTVS and Angel. Let’s list some obvious similarities:
As mentioned before a young blonde superhero falls in love with a dark haired and they a blonde vampire. In Buffy, however the door is left open to Buffy’s future relationships, and while Sookie ends up without a vampire lover, she does end up married. The dark vamp in both series seems to be more noble, and the blonde is more dangerous.
Vampires are the biggest monsters, but there are many others that need to be faced – including werewolves, ghosts and demons. And sometimes people turn into the monsters, like Oz turning into a werewolf in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or Tara turning into a vampire in True Blood.
Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and True Blood had significant female vampire leads who had been prostitutes. Darla was the daughter of the Master himself, as well as the sire of Angel. Pam was the progeny of Eric, and she was the madam of a famous New Orleans brothel when the powerful Eric met her.
Both series have lesbian and gay themes – since they are appealing to guys who love science fiction, the sexuality is lesbian rather than gay for the most part.
Some of the names are even the same between the two series, such as Tara in both series who is sought out by a big, gorgeous, bad. (Glory in BTVS and Maryann Forrester the Maenad)
There were bad witches in both series that started off as good
There were some similarities that were too close to be coincidence – such as the powerful child vampire who set beside the Master “The Anointed One” and “Alexander Drew” on the Vampire Authority council who was another nine year old vampire. Both were angelic, both were destroyed.
Both series had happy endings against all odds
Who would win in a fair fight Buffy the Vampire Slayer and/or Angel and Sookie the Fairy and her friends?
It is hard, hard, hard to beat Slayer strength – although not impossible
Sookie was half-fae which gave her telepathic as well as lightning rod finger strength
Both had vampires and humans who would fight for them – although just at night for the vamps
Sookie was definitely a lover not a fighter, and Buffy was a warrior. So I would put my odds on Buffy.
Both True Blood and Buffy the Vampire Slayerhad rabid fans. But I would bet on Buffy to stand the test of time.
The first blonde woman of power that we see in Buffy the Vampire Slayer was not Buffy herself – but instead Darla the vampire queen. Buffy season one episode one starts with our first spooky view of Sunnydale High. We hear a crash and see a young rogue leading a VERY looking innocent young woman through the science labs , past the skeletons. He tries to convince her that it is not as spooky as she thinks, and that he will protect her.
Once he is convinced her that it is safe, she learns what she needs to know – they are alone.
And then she shows her true face of evil, transforms into a vampire and attacks and kills him.
Darla was only slated to appear in one episode, but as a show fan, this happily changed. The Darla character made an appearance in two seasons (1st and 5th). And she received such wide fan acclaim that she was even written into Angel. Actually she became one of the most significant members of the series , and this article is just a brief introduction to her.
Learning about her letting you know a little about the ways vampires developed. You were not born a vampire , but you became a vampire by being sired. That means a vampire bit you, and then had you drink from their blood and then when you rose from the grave you would be one of the Undead.
Darla’s Birth as a Vampire
We never knew “Darla’s ” real name, instead she went by the name that was a pet name like “Darling,” or “Honey.” She was a young woman who migrated to the Virginia Colonies from early Europe in the 16th century. She made her living in the oldest profession , and we saw her dying of syphilis. The doctors were applying leeches and other ineffective methods of healing her body – when a heavily cloaked priest offered to try and save her soul.
It turned out that this was no priest – it was the Master – one of the oldest and strongest of the vampires. The Master bites her stating that she will be reborn and will serve him all her immortal life. However, this must have felt like exuberant and unbelievable power for her, from the most disrespected of women, to one to be feared.
Of course the only payment was her soul.
When Darla met her mate – Angel
Darla roams Europe for hundreds of years, doing the Master’s bidding but also living independently.
In a small village in Ireland, she was to meet the man who would end up changing her life.
We see the scene opening as Darla observes a handsome young man drinking and carouseling. Something in him leads her to believe that he could have cunning and strength enough to be her companion.
She lures him – “Liam” into an alley. He found her irresistible, a stunningly beautiful young woman standing by herself. As with the young man in the first scene in Buffyin Sunnydale High, she brought out the protective in Liam. She told him of adventures that they might have together – he said that he had not been anywhere.
Darla bit him, drained her and cut her breast with her nail. As she buried his head in it, he died and became vampire, and her companion.
Darla named him Angelus.
They continued travelling through Europe and creating terror and destruction wherever they were. They loved to kill, and Angelus in particular took pleasure in being mean.
The Gypsy Curse that took Angelus away from Darla
beautiful Gypsy woman in white dress and two man standing in bright room
For centuries Angelus and Darla continued their evil bond , rampaging across the globe and killing as they did. Their tumultuous relationship continued until the night of an unfortunate birthday present. Birthdays are very eventual in Buffyand Angel, so when we see Darla give Angelus a beautiful young woman to eat and torture, we should have realized that it was significant. They feasted and gave this poor beautiful young lady a horrible death.
The gypsy girl had been a favorite of the Kalderash Clan, and her people mourned her greatly.
They decided that the ultimate punishment for Angelus was for him to receive his soul. This turned out to be the ultimate punishment for Angelus. Where the maiden had suffered for hours before she died , Angelus suffered for an eternity. He was plagued with the realization of all that he had hurt, in excruciating detail. He lost his swagger and pride, and began to shrink. And he both desired blood and the dark – and felt all the evil he had caused.
Before he did he tried to convince Darla that he was not changed, but she wasn’t having it.
Darla could smell his “filthy soul.”
Neither of them gave up on each other completely for a little while, they maintained the facade that things were just as normal. Darla even tried to bargain with the Kalderash gypsy elders, but they did not release the curse.
She wanted to kill Angel and Angel wanted to kill her. Both could not do it. Gradually they drifted apart.
After more than 150 years, they both settled in Sunnydale at different times.
In her early days in the town of Sunnydale, Darla fed on Sunnydale high school students. One student was killed by Darla – which let Buffy know that even if she left Hemery High in Los Angeles, she could not leave her fate as a vampire slayer. However, she sloppily left the student drained lying on the school grounds. It was this victim that caught the attention of Buffy Summers (the “Slayer”) noting that vampires were in Sunnydale.,
Angel also settled in Sunnydale carrying a human soul which made Darla disgusted, yet she missed her Angelus and wanted him to turn back into being a vampire. Darla made a terrible mistake in her bloodthirst. Unfortunately,Darla also bit Joyce Summers, Buffy’s mother. To cover her crime Darla blamed Angel for biting Buffy’s mother.
I think she was hoping that Buffy would kill Angel, or preferably Angel would kill Buffy.
Back to Darla and Sunnydale – and the Final Meeting between Angel and Darla
A lot happened in episode seven of Buffy the Vampire “Angel.” Before this episode we thought of Angel as just as a handsome stranger that came in and out of Buffy’s life like a shadow.
And they were falling in love.
But Buffy learned in this episode that Angel wasn’t a man, he was instead the creature that she was destined to eliminate – a vampire. She saw him with her mother who had her neck bleeding , and thought that he had attacked her. But actually it had been Darla.
The next scene pitted an enraged Buffy against Angel – who she thought was just evil, and had played her into falling in love with her. He told her the story of losing his soul and the gypsy curse. They began a dialogue about who he was – how he wasn’t a man , how he fought the evil because he had a soul but he still had evil urges. Their dialogue was abruptly interrupted as Darla appeared on the scene – literally gunning for Buffy, who she believed had taken her last chance with Angel away. Darla wounded Angel with her guns but came after Buffy with an intent to maim and kill.
They fought for their survival, and were helped when Giles, Xander and Willow distracted them.
But in the end it was Angel who came up behind Darla and staked her. She turned as she turned into dust – her eyes full of sadness as she said “Angel.”
We see the Master being outraged at the news saying “She was my favorite!” For 400 years they had stalked the world, and the Master had hoped that Angelus would sit at his right hand when the day came.
Two series I think you probably get the most buzz over are Dexter and Angel/Buffy. Darla was supposed to only be in the first episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Clearly you made an impact. What has been the impact on you of playing such a fun, dark, and tragic figure?
“Darla was epic! What a wonderful gift I was given to play her! I always say that playing Darla was like going to the best graduate school for acting. Joss and the writers challenged me on every level in every episode (emotionally, physically, spiritually). I had just graduated NYU with a BFA in acting, but I didn’t really learn to act until I was on set playing Darla.” source
We are currently glad that she played it too! It is hard to imagine anyone playing Darla but Julie Benz.
Darla was pivotal to the series, the first femme fatale we loved to hate.
Vampires or Zombies: Who Are Stronger, Cooler and Sexier?
Although you would hate to meet either vampires or zombies on a casual walk, your encounter would be very different depending on who you came across. That is because zombies and vampires are two completely different species altogether.
In short – vampires are far more interesting. Much cooler, stronger and sexier than zombies.
In the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, you will be dealing with mostly vampires, although zombies are mentioned too. That is because vampires have the capacity for intelligence, wit and passion and zombies are just reanimated dead bodies. Vampires are full of personality, memories and sexuality – enough to fill up two series and create the loyal fans that still love the shows.
But just a little bit of study of zombies vs vampires makes it very obvious why the series is Buffy the Vampire Slayer , rather than zombie killer – and why the Angel is the vampire with a soul.
Zombies are just walking dead flesh – with a haunting history
These gross magically re-animated corpses are no beauties.
It is hard to feel anything in regards to zombies except for disgust . They are basically walking viruses whose only purpose is to feed. There seems to be some disagreement about whether they need to eat to consume, but the truth is that they need to feed on humans. You will never become entranced and in love with zombies – there is no thrall to be had there.
A zombie is usually controlled by a master who is proficient in sorcery and thus controls the creature. The sorcerer uses zombies to fulfill his desires and aspirations. They make the zombies as their slaves. That is how the zombies in Buffy and Angelare described.
Other folklore has them being created when they are infected with a virus. Most of the time zombies are super strong but slow moving, but other systems have them as quicker to move around.
However, there is more to the story of zombies – a tragic history. The myth of zombies have roots in Haiti, in the voodoo religion. Then the country was known as Saint-Domingue and was owned by France. African slaves were worked almost literally to death on the sugar plantations, often dying within two years of captivity. At times it seemed that the only solace was suicide but in the Voodoo religion, it was believed that this provided no way out. If the slaves committed suicide they would doomed to haunt the fields of Hispaniola rather than getting relief in a kind of Heaven that the slaves called lan guinee – literally Guinea (Africa.) source
It was ingrained in the Haitians self-image to be slaves, to the point, where their religion took on some aspects. The zombies developed more in Voodoo religion, and at one time it was believed that voodoo priests could animate the dead and use them to do whatever heinous tasks they wanted.
Zombies play a part in Buffy and Angel in several episodes
Zombie bride
These gross members of the undead are well represented in the Buffy and Angel series. And they are fought and defeated when the master is defeated.
The first appearance of zombies in the series is in Dead Man’s Party Season Three – Episode Two. In this episode Buffy had returned following her brief, but eventful foray into Los Angeles. In the conclusion of Season Two she was pitted against her formerly beloved because he was trying to raise the Acathla demon and destroy the world. You see Angel had lost his soul and become the evil Angelus vampire who was a force for evil and destruction. ““Acathla, the demon, came forth to swallow the world. It was killed by a virtuous knight who pierced the demon’s heart before it could draw breath to perform the act. Acathla turned to stone, as demons sometimes do, and was buried where neither man nor demon would want to look. Unless of course they’re putting up low rent housing.” Angelus – in Buffy season two.
So of course Buffy had to kill him. Even though she loved him.
Fans will know that she had left Sunnydale following her despair and grief at having to kill Angel. She did not tell anyone what she was doing, she could not dea. However, she found that she could not escape her grief by changing geography. She returned to her family and friends in the next episode. Buffy found that although they said that everything was alright, there was an air of avoidance all around her. Her mother had hoped to settle some of this by an intimate dinner party with Giles, Willow and Xander – but it turned into a huge party with people who did not even know her. Joyce (Buffy’s Mom) had brought home a piece of art from the gallery that she worked in. Unfortunately, besides being scary looking it also brought zombies crashing through the windows. They were eventually able to defeat the demon that was bringing in the zombies, (yeah Buffy) and the door was open to communication and healing.
In Angel, zombies make their first appearance in Angel Season 2 Episode 14 – The Thin Dead line.
We need a bit of backstory before we get to the zombie part. You see in episode 2 of season 10 – Angel had fallen to a darkness where he actually fires the people he loved: former street vampire killer Gunn, former Vampire Slayer Watcher Wesley Wyndam Pryce and Cordelia, who is a snotty bitch at the beginning of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but transforms to a major force for good when she is in Angel. The show opens when we see a heart-broken Angel coming back into the hotel where he had his former detective firm. He had to split with his human compadres because he believed he had to go to a very dark place to kill Drusilla and Darla, and eliminate the evil law firm Wolfram and Hart if possible. He had been unsuccessful in totally eliminating evil, by sinking to it’s level – but he still cared about his friends.
This episode has Angel skulking in the background as Gunn goes to deal with raging cops who are viciously targeting street kids. The cops attack the totally innocent and non-threatening Wesley as well – shooting him in the gut and blocking the ambulance.
The cops are fearless – and almost indestructible. With Angel’s massive strength he is able to knock the head literally off of one of the cops – who continues talking. As zombies are like to do. Angel gets the badge of the cop he kills and tracks him down with the help of his friend Kate at the police station.
Angel knows that he has to find the person who is controlling the zombies. It turns out that they are re-animated corpses of cops that died on the job. The police chief of that station has got into some dark voodoo and Angel is only able to stop it by finding the dark god he worships, and crushing it. Magically all the zombies fade away.
The scene ends when Angel is visiting Wesley in the hospital. However, a hurt Cordelia (who did not realize what he had done to help) told to go away.
The last we see time we see zombies in the series is Angel is Season 4 Episode 8 – Habeas Corpus. In this episode Angel and the crew have to return to the Evil Law Firm to fight the Beast which up to this point has proved to be absolutely unbeatable. They are only there to retreat Angel’s son Connor. Angel finds Connor but he soon finds that he is having to backhand and shove zombies to get out of the law firm. After having to get into a fist fight with someone who he thinks is dead – Connor says “He looks dead.” Angel says “He is dead. Technically undead.” He is a zombie.” “What’s a Zombie? Connor asks. “Oh, it is dead – technically undead.” “Like you?” Connor retorts. “No! Zombies are slow moving , dim-witted things that craze human flesh.” “Like you – ” Connor answers. “No – there is a different! Trust me” Angel says.
In other words Angel does not want to be associated with zombies one bit.
Because like I said – vampires are just way cooler.
What are Vampires?
Like a zombie, a vampire is a corpse that craves humans – specifically their blood. Vampires roam around at night looking for the warm blood needed for their survival. So the interaction between vampires and people is one of fear.
Many believe that the Slavs came up with the vampire myths.
But it is much more than that – and that is why Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and in fact all the vampire books and shows from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to True Blood by Charlaine Harris have had eager audiences to hear the tale year after year.
But for many reasons, Buffy and Angel fans think that the Buffyverse is the best.
Bloodthirsty male vampire in medieval dress is biting a beautiful lady
Why are we drawn to vampires? And what can they do?
Vampires feed on blood – and then kill their victims. However, sometimes they decide to turn the person into another vampire rather than just killing them. In Buffy and Angel this happens by having the victim drink the blood of the vampires. Then when they rise from the grave they will be vampires themselves. They will look like the person they once were – but they will not be them. They will be soulless beings with evil on their mind. That is what the members of the series had find out and find out quick when their friends turned into vampires. Xander saw his best male friend Jesse turn into a vampire, and had to fact the fact that he had to kill him or be killed.
Why is there still the thrall?
First of all, in spite of the fact that they do not souls – they can love. Drusilla will tell you that. And love in an obsessive, over-powering , all possessing way.
Vampires can tempt their victims because they are intelligent, or at least as intelligent as people get. Some develop all kinds of elaborate ways of cruelty , some just randomly maim and kill. They can be solitary, although they can live in nests and groups. They are incredibly strong and fast, or at least much more so than the average human. Most of the vampires inAngeland Buffy got around by walking, running – or driving cars
In the Buffyverse – the Prince of Darkness – Count Dracula was the only vampire who could fly, but in other series more vampires are given that ability.
Vampires can scheme, plan evil deeds and otherwise raise havoc.
And of course, don’t forget their superhuman ability to fight, scale walls and pull out a fang or two when needed. And some like the Master and Drusilla were able to hypnotize their victims.
Second-guessing them can make escaping them terrifying. But if you can get hold of their knowledge by any means possible you will learn a lot.
In Buffyand Angel there are many instances of where vampires were able to identify other demons and creatures of evil and help our team for good.
First of all, vampires could be bribed and threatened. For instance in Buffy season two episode seven – “Lie to Me” – Buffy is able to beat Spike and keep him from killing a lot of people but holding onto his beloved Drusilla and threatening to kill her. And while Spike was kept neutered by the chip in his head – he was able to unable to hurt living beings, he found that he could hurt demons, and became a valuable ally. Vampires could also be fonts of information – like when Spike could speak Fyarl, and could help Giles when got turned into a Fyarl demon.
But the most good that came from the vampires Angel and Spike is when they each respectively got their souls back. To understand how that happened is to understand the series, but just trust that the souls made a huge difference in the series.
Many Vampires are sexy
The appeal of the night, the losing of your soul but gaining eternal life, the strength and confidence that comes with the kind of just not caring that vampires do. Much of both of the series involves love and sexuality – with Buffy’s first big love being Angel and much later in the series Spike.
Many of us lose ourselves in our first loves, and Buffy and Angel delve deep into that theme.
But they are not the only one. The original Dracula was known for tempting women and wooing them to give up their lives and souls rather than taking it from them.
However, the idea of being on the dark side, of going away from all that your family and culture wanted is very tempting to adolescents – and the adolescents in all of us.
Don’t be fooled – vampires and sexuality go hand in hand and zombies are not tempting even a bit.
Weaknesses of Vampires
Nobody lives forever. Even the undead immortal. There are definitely ways to kill vampires.
The trusty wooden stake. Bullets won’t do it, but an oak stick will ever time.
Holy water – water that has been blessed by priests will burn vampires.
The Bible and Cross – both are effective against the evil undead.
Beheading works every time.
Pushing out into the sunlight will immediately do the fanged folks in.
Garlic is a real turn off.
Is the Silver bullet effective against vampires? Nah, those are effective against werewolves. But they do hurt like hell
However, vampires are sneaky , cunning and evil. The hardest thing is getting close enough to them to use any of the weapons you might have.
So in an epic battle between zombies and vampires who would win?
Well by this time I think you know I would come down on the side of vampires winning. But let’s tally up the strengths and weaknesses.
Vampires have the cunning, ability to plan and quickness in moveness that would knock the stuffing out of most zombies.
However, zombies don’t die when are exposed to sunlight, so in a daylight attack they could easily win.
Vampires are free agents – these soulless devils are not controlled by a zombies master so they could do whatever they wanted. Including run away , or go to ground if they needed to. If there really became a vampire vs zombie war – vamps would sleep and hide all day and come out stronger and swifter at night to fight the zombies off.
However, vampires can feel pain – which zombies cannot.
Zombies have great hearing, but then again so do vampires.
Zombies would be unlikely to be attacking vampires in the first place, and vice versa. Both are seeking living beings to feed on, unless the zombie master told the zombies to go against vampires for some reason.
There is little in the world of the zombies to fascinate us – and much with vampires.
If I have enticed you to check either series – you can easily find them online. And I hope I am piquing your interest!
Why do Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel have a lasting legacy?
Buffy and the companion series Angel came onto the scene in the early 2000’s and are unforgettable.
Because they were so in-depth with their characterizations, full of humor and memorable dialogue and deep in their themes they remain some of the most valued TV ever.
Buffy fights Vampires
Why I love Buffy and Angel
When I tell my friends that I love “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the associated series “Angel” they look at me like I am a bit daft.
Why should a 62 year old educated woman be interested in series that were created for the teenage niche? And about vampires and vampire slayers of all things?
On March 10, 1997 Buffy the Vampire Slayer was unleashed on the world. Based on a much shoddier movie, the series on WB became a hit. Eventually another show Angel sprang out of it, based on one of the characters Angel the Vampire with a soul. These babies of the genius creator Joss Whedon
What is memorable is that this show, which many people think is or should be a teeny-bopper or B rated horror show that came and went – still remains in reruns. And reruns. And reruns!
Why? After all – it was not recognized by the “Powers that Be” – the Emmys. After 7 seasons not a single nomination.
Yet the fans – like me are incredibly loyal. There are fan clubs , trivia contests and fanfests. (I was going to go to on this year before the sirens starting blaring “shelter in place” in Northern CA.)
Buffy and Angel is an action, monster show – but it is one that is PG
The vampires in Buffy and Angel conveniently turn to dust, which means there are less just gross scenes as compared to the series “True Blood” where vampires explode into a hideous bloody mess for example.
There is sex on Buffy but it is not as graphic as other vampire series and yet it still gets the point across. Perhaps it is because the networks just were not allowing it then, but you will not hear profanity on Buffy and Angel – and that is refreshing.
Buffy and Angel’s Characters are Highly Developed and Relatable
Buffy’s characters are highly related human characters, with the use of magic and science fiction revealing them instead of defining them. They are people you can recognize, both the teenagers and the adults. When the series began Buffy was just changing schools and the school’s cliques were firmly in place.
But ALL of the characters grew throughout the series, and that is one reason why this series is so special.
The characters are not cartoonish or flat. Buffy is more like literature, in fact one the most amazing parts of the series is how the characters developed and changed.
Some were popular – like Cordelia, Harmony, Anya and even Buffy at first
Believe it or not Buffy was very popular at her old school Hemery High School in Los Angeles. I mean why not? She was gorgeous, a cheerleader with two parents who loved her. And Buffy was innocent at heart. She really just wanted to be a girl who grew up and had a normal life.
That was before she was called to be the Slayer at Hemery – and ended up burning the school gym down because it was crawling with vampires.
She never really got gained that status at Sunnydale High – again because of that pesky calling problem.
The popular girls at Sunnydale were birds of another feather. They were led by Cordelia and the Cordettes – who are willing to use any kind of mean girl attacks to rule the school. Cordelia drove a Chrysler Cirrus with the personalized nameplate of “Queen C” that pretty well summed it up.
Some were nerdy and pariahs
They are the students who have no popularity like Xander and Willow who yet turn out to have immense strengths. And immense weaknesses.
On the part of Xander it was loyalty and willingness battle that went beyond any rationality. In one memorable Halloween episodes of Buffy – Xander Harris plays a soldier, and he is like the soldiers that we thank for their service – willing to get killed or hurt if need be to protect Buffy and the good fight.
And yet although he is brave during battle, he is the guy you want on your side – he can be a coward at love. And blinded to the opportunities in front of him. While he is able to keep going when Buffy rebukes his love, he does not cherish the love that is given to him. He ignores Willow who he believes is too much of a friend to be a lover – until Cordelia taps him and Willow’s love is forbidden.
In the case of Willow she was incredibly intelligent but meek and mousy. That quality meant that she was overlooked by most of the people in her high school – and had no friends except Xander at the beginning of the series. They had been friends since childhood – and that specialness continued through the whole series.
And the demons, vampires and monsters were a treasure chest
Usually there was a major villain of each season but some other monster of the week villains that the heroes had to fight.
Some of the vampires were extremely sexy – some were just stupid,
But you will remember the villains. From Drusilla the insane psychic vampire to the Gnarl who paralyzes his victims and pulls off their skin piece by piece you will not forget them. Buffy and Angel also had a monster of the week theme as well.
The heroes can be flawed and evil – and sometimes when they go evil they can be redeemed.
Poor Faith. For a psychotic killer we end up having some sympathy for her – and even she is redeemable.
Buffy certainly goes through her rough times. Starting off as innocent and delightful, she can turn very dark.
Willow is the most innocent at the beginning which makes Dark Willow so heart-breaking and White Willow such a relief.
The Heroes fight with cool weapons
Buffy learns early on that she can kill vampires with stakes, sunlight, saws and knives when she beheads them. Willow is the Queen of Magic.
Dracula in coffin. Vampire Count in black casket. Anti vampires tools. Set for extermination and destruction of ghoul: holy water and bible. Cross and Aspen stake. Garlic and silver bullet
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel are an intellectual’s delight
Joss Whedon was college educated in both the United States and Britain – and it shows.
Whedon is very familiar with Shakespeare
Sprinkled throughout the series are all kinds of literary references. The use of symbolism and metaphor is present in almost every episode. High school as a hell – the demons being real instead of just imagined. Willow addicted to magic instead of drugs. And Buffy facing the source of her power – learning that it has evil in it as well as good like in Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer had some groundbreaking episodes
Of special note are the following episodes:
“The Body.” Season 5 episode 16. There is a totally unexpected death of a lovely character. Joss Whedon has said: “This is the finest thing I will ever do.” In this episode, Buffy and the Scoobies do not fight against the supernatural – they fight against real human death. And they lose. Each character has unique and telling ways of dealing with the death – Willow can’t find an outfit that is good, Anya the newly human ex-demon sadly recounted how Joyce would not be able to drink fruit punch. Xander put a hole in the wall. And Buffy just would not believe it was real. But she was wrong.
“Superstar” season 4 episode 17 – the dork of the school becomes the guy who is trusted in every situation. We are shown a brief scene of Jonathan in the school tower about to kill himself which was in one of the earlier episodes. But in this episode the roles are changed. He beats out the Slayer, he is called upon by the Initiative to fight against Adam, and he is both a basketball and musical star. The styling of Whedon is in fine order as he creates clever scenes of Jonathon in powerful roles and interspersed them where Buffy usually is. In fact he starts the episode with Jonathon walking down the street in the leather jacket of Angel as the “Slayer.” What will happen when the magic wears off?
“Hush” -Buffy is known for snappy and memorable dialogue. But Whedon wanted to give himself a challenge – he wanted to write an episode where the majority of the action occurred in absolute silence. The story was based on a children’s fairy tale where monsters stole the voices of people who could not scream to protect themselves. And it is amazing what happens when people shut up for a few minutes. Buffy and Riley experience their first kiss, Buffy and Tara have their first powerful spell together – and the sign that they are going to be in love. We got some humor with Spike when Xander found him with blood on his lips and assumed that he had been eating Anya. When she found out that he had not done it she ended up being thrilled – making a classy finger in a circle motion and running up to bed.
“Once More with Feeling” This musical episode was so unique and revealed talents that we did not realize the characters had. The love song between Allyson Hannigan and Amber Benson was delightful , truly magical in the animation and dancing. And that was made even more heart-breaking when Benson and Anthony Head had to sing in “Under Your Spell/Standing – Reprise” – when they realize that they are going to have to say goodbye to the people they love the most.
Buffy is Full of tragic and Prophetic Dreams
By the end of the series people basically trusted Buffy when she said something unusual was going to happen. But in the beginning they did not, which basically was annoying.
One thing that could be trusted were the Slayer’s dreams.
Buffy and Angel are Tragic and deeply Painful
No one has particularly successful careers.
Relationships are doomed. Often the beloved ends up dead.
Buffy CANNOT have a happy birthday.
You can’t get revenge – if if the vampire killed your mother – because of the “Mission.”
And everyone of the main characters carries some deep pain until the series ends.
Buffy and Angel are Hilarious
There will be humor sparked in every episode of Buffy and Angel.
But two particularly hilarious episodes are The Zeppho in Buffy where Xander learns his strength but in the meanwhile chases some zombies who are making “cake” that turns out to be a bomb.
And in Angel – who could forget the episode “Smiletrain” when the big, bad vampire Angel is turned into a puppet?
Why do Buffy and Angel Matter after all these years?
Buffy and Angel both fight the Mission even though the odds are stacked against them and they know they will never be finished. We are left with episodes we will not forget, heroes and villains that we want to see more of.
Buffy and Angel fans did not want the series to end.
And we know that Buffy matters!
